Farm Accidents

Farm

Farming accidents are common in the heartland.

Agriculture is among the most dangerous occupations in the nation, and also one of the most familiar to those of us in rural Oklahoma. We rely on the wheat harvests each year, not to mention the fruits and vegetables for our wide array of annual festivals – from the Rush Springs watermelons to the Stilwell strawberries and the Porter and Stratford peaches. Every day nearly 500 farm workers suffer work-related injuries. Five percent of those result in permanent disabilities, according to the National Center for Farmworker Health, Inc.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that agricultural jobs have one of the highest death rates of any industry. Tractor rollovers are a primary cause for on-the-job farm accident injuries. Other causes can be attributed to hay balers, augers and backhoes, to name a few.
